EARTHWISE BEAUTY - Farizad's Veil SPF 30+ Powder
EARTHWISE BEAUTY - Farizad's Veil SPF 30+ Powder
Farizad's Veil is Ava's take on a sunscreen formula for the contemporary woman: luxurious, non-pore-clogging, light, breathable, flexible, and with a beautiful, sophisticated natural scent.
It is a liberation of sunscreen itself from its typically oily carrier medium. Since most of us have a carefully researched and tested skin care ritual for our skin type, we don't want to add a layer of sunscreen cream into the mix, which could clog the pores or feel unbreathable or heavy.
With Farizad's Veil, you use your beloved daytime facial oil and add just a bit of Farizad's Veil powder to it. It mixes right in and offers a range of SPF options depending on how much of the powder you use, without inadvertently adding anything undesirable.
The sunscreen ingredient here is highest-grade, minimally processed non-nano and uncoated zinc oxide (particle size 325 nm), which is the healthiest, safest, and most reliable sunscreen ingredient available today (the only other nontoxic option is titanium dioxide, another mineral sunscreen, but it does not offer full-spectrum UV protection; all other sunscreen options are chemical compounds). Nano particles are controversial and it remains to be proven whether they are safe for our health, and we specifically used uncoated zinc oxide as the most unrefined, most natural version (coated zinc oxide means that the particles have been coated with another substance).
Zinc oxide has so many advantages as a sunscreen: it can be safely used around the eyes, and it is a physical sun reflector, so it works immediately after application and makes one feel (a little) cooler when in the sun. It is biodegradable and safe for coral reefs and other marine life (it settles on the sea floor without causing any harm or entering into chemical reactions).
There are several skin care benefits from zinc oxide itself, from anti-acne and anti-inflammatory action to protective and soothing properties. The anti-acne benefits only shine if you use zinc oxide in a noncomedogenic, acne-skin-appropriate facial oil or serum.
The second ingredient in Farizad's Veil is pure powdered aloe leaves, which perform many functions here, from moisturizing, skin damage preventing, and skin damage correcting to cooling, repairing, and soothing. With how many skin care products do you get to wear the actual powdered herbs on your skin all day? That is a mask session in itself. The aloe also softens the stark white color of the zinc oxide, making it less-than-typically skin whitening.
The scent of Farizad's Veil is very feminine yet assertive (reminiscent of a woman with confidence and trust in her inner guidance): Moroccan roses, precious and rare pink Indian champaca flower (with a honey element), rose geranium, Madagascar geranium leaves, and a delicate frankincense from Oman that has an orange undertone and is not the masculine type, yet has an amber-like resin component.
The fragrance, product name, and label design were inspired by Farizad, a heroine from Arabian Nights. Determined, a believer in destiny and in her intuition's voice, Farizad had the smile of the rose and cried real pearls!
As with all our products, all the aroma components are fully disclosed in the ingredients list and are artisan-distilled, small-batch, therapeutic-grade essential oils and absolutes, organic or responsibly wildcrafted.
The fragrance will preserve best in the glass container; you can expect it to dissipate much more quickly in the plastic container option. If for any reason you would rather have an unscented sunscreen, leave either jar for a few days with the lid off, just lightly covered with fabric or a paper towel to protect the product from dust.
Protect the potency and freshness of the botanicals by storing the jar away from light and from excessive heat exposure.
Certified cruelty free, vegan, cold process, all natural, handcrafted, fair trade.
For all skin types, including acne, combination, sensitive, and mature.
Active ingredient: non-nano uncoated zinc oxide 94% (Canada); others: aloe barbadensis leaf powder*, organic hexane-free Rosa centifolia absolute (Morocco), wildcrafted hexane-free pink champaca absolute (India), organic Pelargonium graveolens (geranium bourbon) oil, Pelargonium roseum (rose geranium) oil*, wildcrafted frankincense oil (Oman).
Measure out a single-use amount of the powder (1/16 to 1/8 teaspoon) into a ceramic mixing bowl and add 4 to 8 drops of your daytime facial oil or oil-based serum, or an equivalent amount of face balm. Mix with your fingertips and apply onto the skin, rubbing in gently with your fingertips to minimize the whitening effect and to distribute evenly.
A barely whitened skin will give an SPF of 20–25, skin whitened by one shade will give an SPF of 30–35, and slightly more whitened skin will provide an SPF of 50, but these numbers are approximate, since it all depends how much powder you use and how sensitive your skin is to the sun's rays.
The SPF numbers are based on our testing and experience, including testing side by side with well-regarded brands of mineral sunscreen products, from creams and sticks to dusting powders. We have found that when using "as much as possible," resulting in a slight white cast, yet not a white enough shade to raise eyebrows in public, we were less likely to get a sunburn or tan with Farizad's Veil than with the other SPF 30+ products we tested; this could be due to the fact that Farizad's Veil dispersed in our own oils and serums was much more pleasurable to use so we used more.
If you want a light-feel, "second skin" type of sunscreen, mix Farizad's Veil with a moisturizing, light facial oil or oil-based serum. Zinc oxide disperses in oils, allowing you to instantly create a milky-looking SPF lotion. We find that when preparing this sunscreen mixture, we use a few more drops of oil or serum than if we were using the oil or serum alone (otherwise you end up with a paste that is hard to spread evenly).
Farizad's Veil will work well mixed with any of our facial oils and with Ferns and Moss Face Serum (which adds major antioxidants and radical scavengers to preserve skin's youth and prevent skin damage). It does not work with our aloe-based moisturizers and gels. It will very likely work with other brands' moisturizers that are emulsions containing some oils, but not with gels or gel-creams. Test a few different additions and their amounts to determine what works best for you. You may even try mixing Farizad's Veil with your liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer. For a simple, noncomedogenic, and very pleasing result, try pure organic cold-press unrefined jojoba or argan oil.
Since Farizad's Veil is a physical barrier, protecting the skin from external factors including the sun's rays, it doesn't matter whether you implement it in your moisturizer or makeup layer. Zinc oxide offers nice coverage and mattifying properties, so you may find you don't even need to use a foundation with Farizad's Veil.
